Business Plans: Presenting Skills
The ability to make a compelling presentation is one of the most highly valued skills in the business world. Presentations introduce new products, make sales and garner new clients, suggest mergers, train employees, and report to shareholders. Without qualified presenters in an organization, a company can severely limit its own potential. Fortunately, presentation skills can be readily learned and there are many outlets for gaining the necessary skills.
Many people carry the very common fear of public speaking. Whether to large groups or small, the idea of getting up in front of a room of people and making a presentation brings many people a sense of dread. More often than not, this fear is rooted in the fear of the unknown. Having never made a public speech, they make it out to be much more complex and difficult than it really is. All it takes is solid preparation, good organization, some fundamental skills, and confidence.
Preparation is nothing more than knowing your subject. The act of researching and familiarizing yourself with the specifics of a topic, and the prevailing theories concerning the topic, brings with it the confidence you need to make a presentation. Organization is simply putting your remarks in order and cross referencing them with your visual aids–so that you not only know what to say but also when to say it. A well-organized slide show can be quite helpful, and having a wireless remote with which to control the presentation can allow a speaker freedom to move around while presenting, as opposed to being trapped next to the computer.
Fundamental Presentation Skills
Any beginning public speaking course will tell you that connecting with your audience is absolutely critical. You should never turn your back on them. You should always speak clearly and at a medium pace so you do not confuse them or make them strain to hear you. Portable speakers can help with this problem. You should also not simply read from your slides–otherwise, why are you even there? Finally, you should try to maintain a calm, but engaged, demeanor if you are nervous. Modest self-deprecation and humor also go a long way to combating nervousness.
